Understanding Bitcoin Difficulty Adjustments

Bitcoin's difficulty adjustment algorithm is designed to keep block times at approximately 10 minutes regardless of how much mining power joins or leaves the network. Every 2,016 blocks (roughly 2 weeks), the network recalculates difficulty based on how fast the previous 2,016 blocks were found.

If blocks were found faster than 10 minutes on average (indicating more hashpower joined), difficulty increases. If blocks were slower, difficulty decreases. In recent years Bitcoin difficulty has trended consistently upward as new efficient ASICs come online.

The 2028 Halving: What to Expect

The next Bitcoin halving, expected around April 2028, will reduce the block reward from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. Historically, halvings have been followed by significant price increases as the reduced supply issuance meets sustained or growing demand. The 2020 halving (reward: 12.5 → 6.25 BTC) preceded a bull run to $69,000. The 2026 halving (6.25 → 3.125 BTC) was followed by BTC reaching all-time highs.

However, past performance doesn't guarantee future results. Use the BTC price post-halving input to model your own scenario — conservative, base case, and optimistic.

FAQ: Bitcoin Difficulty & Halvings

When is the next Bitcoin halving? +

The next Bitcoin halving is expected around April 2028, when the block reward drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. This happens at block height 1,050,000. The exact date depends on block timing — if blocks are found faster than every 10 minutes, it arrives earlier.

How much does Bitcoin difficulty grow per year? +

Bitcoin difficulty growth has averaged 30–50% annually over recent years, driven by new ASIC generations and expanded mining operations globally. In 2026, difficulty grew approximately 45%. In 2023 it grew ~70%. Future growth depends on new hardware efficiency improvements and how many new miners come online.

Will my ASIC still be profitable after the halving? +

Post-halving profitability depends on BTC price compensating for the revenue cut. If BTC doubles after the halving (as it has historically), miners with efficient hardware remain profitable. Miners above ~20 J/TH (like the Antminer S21 Pro at 15 J/TH) are better positioned to survive difficulty and halving pressure. Use this calculator to model your specific scenario.

What is Bitcoin's current mining difficulty? +

Bitcoin's current mining difficulty is shown in real time at the top of this page, pulled from the Minerstat API. Difficulty is measured in trillions (T) — a difficulty of 100T means a miner needs to compute, on average, 100 trillion hashes to find a valid block. See the live figure in the stats bar above.
